Comparative Study and Analysis of the Capital City of Chandigarh- Two Master Plans by Albert Mayer, Mathew Nowicki & Le- Corbusier

Abstract

Morphology and fabric of new cities  is  generally defined by the master plans, prepared for the city, based on; site, climate, culture, functions and projected population. Capital city of Chandigarh, holds  distinction of having two  different master plans prepared  for the city.  First plan prepared by Albert Mayer& Mathew Nowicki and second evolved  by Le-Corbusier. Currently, city stands developed based on Corbusier’s  plan. Both plans remain different and distinct, in vision, intent and contents, using different approach to; planning of  city, neighbourhood planning, traffic and transportation and planning of  shopping, housing and green spaces. Looking at the  vision, intent, contents, structure and basic fabric, paper  makes an attempt to compare two master plans and tries to  visualise  and bring out what  the city would have gained and lost, had the first master plan of Mayer and Nowicki been implemented to develop the capital city.
