POTHOLE REPAIRING USING ENHANCED COLD MIX ASPHALT

Anjana P S, Jikhil Joseph

Abstract

Potholes are a common issue on roads and highways, causing damage to vehicles and posing a safety risk to drivers. Traffic volume and loads have increased significantly in recent years, coupled with the high summer temperature and the low temperature in winter cause the formation of potholes. The conventional method is the use of hot mix asphalt. Continuous use of hot mix asphalt (HMA) accelerates environmental deterioration, fossil fuel consumption, global warming, and depletion of natural resources. Further, waste generation and its disposal problem are also a threat to environment. A right step toward the creation of environment- friendly road infrastructure is the use of Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA). Every stage of building the road with cold-mix asphalt is carried out at room temperature. The extensive use of cold mixing in the field is discouraged by the long curing period and low early strength. Enhancing pavement performance and extending its service life has raised significant interest in the use of modifiers in cold mix asphalt mixtures. This will improve the mixture's resistance to the negative impacts of weather fluctuations and traffic loads. Waste materials can be used as fine aggregates to make cold mix asphalt more environmentally friendly. As an alternative to regular port land cement and limestone, CMA is combined with waste water sludge fly ash (UFA) in this study. Thus proved to be a sustainable paving material with economical and environmental advantages. Then by increasing the applications of CMA more advisable.
