Exploring Sustainable Highway Materials in Bangladesh: Current Practices and Future Research Directions

Raisul Islam Shuvo, Md. Nahid Hossain

Abstract

Highway materials serve as the fundamental building blocks utilized in the creation and upkeep of roadways and expressways. These materials comprise a broad spectrum of elements, encompassing aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and a variety of supplements. The careful choice of suitable highway materials is a pivotal determination that directly influences the endurance, safety, and overall performance of roads. In the context of Bangladesh's infrastructure development, this literature review examines important concerns relating to highway materials, with a particular emphasis on sustainable practices and future study fields. It investigates topics such as the recyclability of modified bituminous concrete pavement, the circular economic potential of waste/recycled materials in pavement construction, appropriate binder selection for flexible pavement construction, and alternatives for rutting prevention in national highways. Through an examination of these areas, this review intends to offer a better understanding of the existing landscape of highway materials in Bangladesh and pinpoint avenues for future research and advancement.
