SOIL STABILIZATION USING HALLOW STONE COLUMN

K . Mahendran, Dr. M. Shahul Hameed

Abstract

Improving the strength characteristics and lowering primary consolidation settling can be accomplished extremely well with the stone column approach. The construction industry makes extensive use of stone column-based ground improvement techniques. It is a highly successful technique for enhancing the engineering qualities of soil in every way and lessens the issue of settlement in poorly grounded soil, including silt, clay, and silty sand. Either a top or bottom feed system, with or without jetted water, is used to install stone columns. Compacted aggregates, such as crushed stone or gravel, make up the majority of the stone column. In cohesive soil, stone columns work far better than in sandy or silty soil. The lateral confinement provided by the surrounding soil may not be sufficient to form the stone column when it is erected in excessively soft soils. When it comes to the cost of stone columns, the price of the stone accounts for the majority of the expense. By using the hollow stone column with Gabion mesh, the amount of aggregates used is decreased in order to account for these factors. Materials will become less useful as a result.
