Abstract

Behavioural problems among preschool children are commonly observed and may significantly influence a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. Early identification and appropriate management of these behavioural issues are essential for promoting healthy psychological development. Mothers play a crucial role in identifying behavioural problems and implementing appropriate management strategies at home. However, many mothers lack adequate knowledge regarding behavioural problems and their management.

The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of video-assisted learning on knowledge regarding the management of behavioural problems of preschool children among employed and unemployed mothers. A quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. The study was conducted among 60 mothers of preschool children aged 3–6 years residing in selected communities of Pullur–Periya Panchayath, Kasaragod district, Kerala. Purposive sampling procedures were used to choose 30 working moms and 30 jobless mothers for the sample.

A structured knowledge questionnaire with thirty items about behavioral issues and how to manage them was used to gather data. After the pre-test, a video-assisted learning programme was administered. A post-test was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

The results revealed that the mean post-test knowledge scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores among both employed and unemployed mothers. The calculated t-values indicated that the improvement in knowledge was statistically significant.

The study concluded that video-assisted learning is an effective educational method to improve mothers’ knowledge regarding behavioural problems and their management among preschool children.
