

Comparative Study of Electrolytes in Menopausal and Non-Menopausal Adult Female (Sodium, Potassium, Bicarbonate and Chloride)
Abstract
It has been observed that menopausal women have a higher risk of developing electrolyte imbalances compared to nonmenopausal women. Menopause, which is caused by an oestrogen deficiency and lasts for 12 months, is not linked to any medical conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the comparative study of electrolytes concentration in menopausal and non-menopausal adult female in (sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and chloride). The study involved twenty (20) consenting adult female participants, including 10 menopausal women and 10 non-menopausal women, recruited from Ekpoma metropolitan, Edo State Nigeria. Consenting subjects had their venous blood extracted in five milliliters (5 ml) and put in a sample bottle with lithium heparin. Blood samples was spun in a bucket centrifuge at 2500 RPM (rounds per minute) for 10 minutes after which plasma was collected and stored frozen in plain sample bottles and was analyzed for electrolyte concentrations. Electrolytes were assayed using chemistry auto analyzers which function by the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the mean, standard deviation, and range of lipid profile in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Independent sample t-tests was used to compare lipid profile between premenopausal and postmenopausal women, Data analysis was done with Graph Pad prism version 8.0.1 (244). The results were expressed as means ± SEM. The results obtained from the current study shows that the mean values of plasma Bicarbonate concentration in the non-menopausal and menopausal adult female groups were 26.10±1.285 and 24.80±1.285, the mean values of plasma chloride concentration in the non-menopausal and menopausal adult female groups were 98.80±2.688 and 101.1±2.688 and the mean values of plasma sodium level in the non-menopausal and menopausal adult female groups were 135.5±9.067 and 134.7±9.067 respectively, the mean values of plasma potassium level in the non-menopausal and menopausal adult female groups were 4.34±0.063 and 5.34±0.063 respectively. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference at 95% confidence level (p <0.05) in the mean values of plasma potassium concentration between menopausal and non-menopausal adult female study groups. At the end of this experimental study, the following were inferred; that the Electrolytes concentration namely plasma bicarbonate, chloride, sodium concentrations does not affect menopausal transition but potassium does.
