Abstract

The reasons and factors that influence and determine the choice of women’s place of birth are dependent on certain factors as was discovered in some studies, and some of the factors includes; socio-economic determinants, cultural and institutional factors. The study investigated the determinants of choice of place of delivery among women of childbearing age in Bomadi community, Delta State. Three research objectives, three research questions guided the study. Cross-sectional descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Multistage stratified random sampling technique was used to select 414 respondents. A self- structured questionnaire was used for data collection from respondents. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentages. Section "A" which contained the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents was analyzed using frequency and percentage while section B to D containing the research questions were analyzed using four point Likert scales of Strongly Disagree (SD), Disagree (D), Agree (A) and Strongly Agree (SA). The results showed that (77%) of the respondents are unemployed. The study further revealed that most (65%) of the respondents earn less than 20,000 in a month. The results also show that most (55%) of the respondents received antenatal care during last delivery. Findings of the study also showed that majority 246(59%) of the respondents strongly disagreed that health facility birth attendants provide tender care. The results from the hypothesis show that there is a significant relationship between socioeconomic, cultural and institutional factors and choice of place of delivery. the study shows that finance, distance, delay, attitude of health care providers, cultural beliefs and some others are factors that affect choice of place of child delivery in Bomadi Community, Delta State. The study recommends that authorities make efforts to increase health care facility deliveries in order to reduce maternal mortality rates.
