

Assessment of Knowledge Level, Perception and Acceptance of Surrogacy among Traders in Selected Markets in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State
Abstract
Background: Infertility affects millions of people of reproductive age worldwide. Surrogacy is one of the solutions to infertility which is gradually being accepted by the Nigerian society. Aim: This study assessed the knowledge level, perception and acceptance of surrogacy among traders in selected markets in Akure south local government area, Ondo state. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used with 150 respondents filling the questionnaire. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) was utilized to analyze the data. The validated questionnaire was administered to respondents and data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics while Pearson’s Chi-square was used for hypothesis testing. Results: Findings of this study revealed that Fifty eight percent (58.0%) of the respondents had good knowledge of surrogacy and the common source of awareness was the media (28.0%). Some of the respondents felt adoption is a better option compared to surrogacy with the mean score of 2.92 and there was a negative response to the acceptance of surrogacy with a mean score of 2.10, respondents disagreed to be surrogate mothers. Conclusion: overall, respondents had an average knowledge about surrogacy, there was a negative response to acceptance of surrogacy. Providing health education programmes would enlighten and increase the level of awareness and knowledge of surrogacy which will I turn influence their perception and acceptance of surrogacy.
