Abstract

The morbidity and mortality rates of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) are significant. There are prenatal, perinatal, or a combination of factors that can predispose a person to NE. A number of factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NE, including thrombophilia, coagulation defects, infections, placental abnormalities, genetic predisposition, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, antenatal maternal factors, familial factors, and metabolic disorders. The only available treatment at the moment, regardless of the cause, is therapeutic hypothermia. To ensure the best possible care, knowing the etiology of NE involved can also direct investigations, such as metabolic and sepsis workups. Comprehending the etiology of NE could enable the creation of preventative measures and targeted adjunctive therapies linked to the underlying mechanism.
