Investigation on Load Carrying Capacity of Screwed Connections with Different Plate Materials and Nylon 66 Screw

Abstract


Recent automotive and industrial machinery required light weight and good strength materials to reduce the weight of vehicles and other machines. A vehicle is assembles with large number of fasteners, such as bolt and nut, rivets and screw nut joints. Screw and bolted joints are primary fasteners used in automobile and other mechanical parts and machinery. Screw joints are used to hold the two parts together which mostly self-tapped. They are used in many applications as they provide good fastening properties. In screw joints, screw and nut are made up of metals such as steel, brass, aluminum, which are heavy in weight and increases weight of machine parts. In this study strength of screw joints with nylon 66 as screw material is investigated for studying its ability to use in many light load applications. Six different cases were analyzed to study the behavior of nylon screw in different conditions. Aluminum and plastic plates with 2, 3 and 4mm plate thickness were used as clamping parts. Also the effect of preload applied on screw on joint strength was observed. Results shows that plate thickness, plate material and preload affect the strength of joint.
