The Role of Journal Impact Factor and H-Index in the Evaluation of Scientific Performance

T. Aditya Sai Srinivas, M. Bharathi

Abstract

The relationship between journal impact factor (JIF) and H-Index and research funding and grants. JIF and H-Index are widely used as measures of research quality and impact. However, there is ongoing debate regarding their validity and reliability in assessing research excellence. This review synthesizes current literature on the use of JIF and H-Index in research funding and grants, exploring the extent to which these metrics influence funding decisions and the criteria used to evaluate research proposals. The review finds that JIF and H-Index are commonly used as indicators of research excellence by funding agencies, and their influence on funding decisions varies by discipline and research field. Moreover, the review highlights the limitations of relying solely on these metrics to evaluate research quality and the need for a more comprehensive approach to evaluating research impact.
