An Request Case for a Full Engineering Environment to Plan, Generate, and Oversee Product Service Systems (PSS)

Hema Srivastava

Abstract

In recent decades, customer expectations have shifted from merely purchasing products to seeking extended support throughout the product lifecycle. To address these evolving demands, companies have introduced Product-Service Systems (PSS), which combine products with associated services. As the role of service engineering has become more prominent, challenges have arisen when integrating services with products not originally designed for such purposes, leading to economic and customer dissatisfaction issues. To mitigate these problems, new methodologies that emphasize the early integration of product and service design have been proposed. Among these is the PSS Lean Design Methodology (PSSLDM), developed through the DIVERSITY project. This methodology covers the entire PSS lifecycle, from conceptualization based on customer needs to performance monitoring aftermarket release, aiming to enhance design and identify potential improvements. To assist companies in utilizing the PSSLDM, the DIVERSITY design platform was created. This platform integrates various tools to facilitate effective PSS design. Its consistency and effectiveness were evaluated through a case study, providing feedback and outlining future implementation steps. This paper describes the platform, summarizes findings from the application case, and suggests directions for future enhancements.
