A Review on Herbal Hair Formulations for the Prevention and Treatment of Premature Greying

Jayesh Dixit, Jitendra Kumar, Minakshi Pandey

Abstract

Premature hair greying (PHG) is an increasing concern among young individuals, affecting self-esteem and signaling potential underlying health issues. The phenomenon of early hair depigmentation is often attributed to a combination of genetic predisposition, oxidative stress, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors such as pollution and smoking. Additionally, nutritional deficiencies, particularly in Vitamin B12, iron, and copper, play a crucial role in accelerating the greying process.

This report explores the causes, impact, and treatment options for PHG, including genetic influences, lifestyle factors, dietary deficiencies, and medical treatments. A detailed study of herbal and clinical solutions is presented, highlighting the effectiveness of natural remedies such as amla, bhringraj, and black sesame seeds, alongside advanced treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and melanin- boosting medications.

Furthermore, this report discusses preventive strategies, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, reducing stress levels, and adopting a proper hair care regimen to delay the onset of greying. The findings indicate that a combination of lifestyle modifications, proper nutrition, and scientifically backed hair care treatments can significantly slow the progression of premature hair greying and potentially restore hair pigmentation in some cases. Future research is essential to develop innovative and effective therapies for PHG management.
