Knowledge Attitude and Factors Influencing the Uptake of Prostate Cancer Screening Among Commercial Bus Drivers in Ondo-West Motor Parks, Ondo State
Abstract
Prostate cancer remains an important public health concern in developing countries. This study was carried out to assess the knowledge, attitude and factors influencing the uptake of prostate cancer screening among commercial drivers in Ondo-west motor parks, Ondo State. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized in the study. The target population for this study were commercial drivers using a sample size of 300 which were selected using convenient sampling techniques. Findings from this study revealed that majority of the respondents were within the age of 50-59 years (39.7%), Christians, of Yoruba ethnicity and attained secondary level of education. A larger percentage of the respondents have not heard of prostate cancer while only few (28%) reported to have heard of prostate cancer and their source of information from hospital (8.7%), from social media (14.0%) while friends and relative (5.3%). Majority of them demonstrated poor knowledge (73.0%) while few demonstrated good knowledge (27.0%) toward prostate cancer screening, the mean ± SD is 60 ± 8.71; the minimum and maximum score is 38 and 83 respectively. While 44.0 percent of respondents had a positive attitude toward prostate cancer screening, with a mean ± SD of 39.9 ± 8.1 and a minimum and maximum score of 22 and 55, respectively, over half (56.0%) had a negative attitude toward the screening with a score range below the mean. Findings from this study establish that there is a significant relationship between age of the commercial, educational status of bus drivers and their knowledge of prostate cancer screening as p-value is less than 0.05. Hence, there is a need to educate prostate cancer screening among commercial drivers in order to increase knowledge through medical outreach campaigns.
