Abstract

This review paper will attempt to synthesize and analyze results from different studies on the influence of mineral and chemical admixtures on concrete. Concrete admixtures as materials other than aggregates, water, and hydraulic cement are added to concrete before it is mixed for the purpose of improving and altering its properties. These admixtures in liquid or powder form are generally incorporated based on mix design necessity to enhance the performance of concrete in both its fresh and hardened forms. Important parameters like workability, strength, finish, cost effectiveness, and durability are greatly affected by the choice and application of admixtures. This paper brings together information on various categories of admixtures, their properties, applications, benefits, and drawbacks, thus delivering a complete picture of their application to optimize concrete performance.
