ONLINE FRAUD AND LEGAL PROTECTION IN INDIA
Abstract
communication, business, and financial transactions. Digital payment systems, online banking, e-commerce platforms, and mobile applications have increased convenience and accessibility for users across the country. However, this technological advancement has also resulted in a significant rise in online fraud and cybercrime activities. Cybercriminals use various techniques such as phishing, identity theft, hacking, fake websites, and financial scams to target individuals and organizations.
Online fraud has become a serious issue affecting the digital economy and public trust in technology. Many users are unaware of cybersecurity practices and often share confidential information without verifying the authenticity of online sources. This creates opportunities for fraudsters to misuse personal and financial data. Businesses and financial institutions also face security threats due to weak cybersecurity infrastructure and increasing digital dependency.
The present study focuses on understanding the causes, impact, and legal protection mechanisms related to online fraud in India. The research is based on secondary data collected from research papers, government reports, RBI publications, and cybercrime statistics. The study highlights the importance of awareness, legal enforcement, and technological advancement in reducing cybercrime.
The findings of the study reveal that lack of digital literacy, weak cybersecurity measures, and delayed reporting systems are major contributors to online fraud. The study concludes that a collaborative effort between government, businesses, and individuals is essential to ensure digital safety and build trust in the online environment.
