Real-Time Coastal Monitoring and Emergency Management Using 5G-Based Telecommunication Infrastructure
Abstract
Coastal regions face increasing threats from environmental hazards and illegal maritime activities, necessitating responsive and intelligent surveillance systems. This study proposes a 5G-enabled telecommunication framework integrating Internet of Things (IoT) devices, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), edge computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance real-time coastal monitoring and emergency response. The system architecture supports rapid data acquisition, processing, and threat detection with reduced latency and improved accuracy. Using NS-3 and MATLAB simulations, key parameters such as latency, energy consumption, and detection accuracy were evaluated across a 10km coastal stretch. The results reveal that the proposed system outperforms traditional models, reducing latency by over 66% and energy use by 41%, while improving detection accuracy by 24%. The study highlights the viability of deploying intelligent 5G-based surveillance systems as a strategic asset for securing coastal environments and advancing blue economy objectives.
