A Sustainable Approach to the Development of Photovoltaics

Shubhangi Nath

Abstract

With the increase in the growth of population and the need for urbanization and globalization, resources particularly the non-renewable ones are getting depleted at an exponential rate. To safeguard the future of people, the United Nations adopted 17 sustainable development goals. Among them, this review throws light on the goal, affordable and clean energy source, by studying the development of photovoltaic cells (PVC). Solar energy is trapped and converted to electric power in the photovoltaic cells. The electric component of PVC when exposed to photons generates electricity. Perovskite solar cell (PSC) has given a new dimension to the development of PVC. But the commercialization of PSC poses a few problems such as efficiency and long term stability. Carbon nanotubes have proven to be the best material for improving the stability of PSC. The present review summarizes the development of perovskite cells emphasizing the renewable sources of carbon for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes.
