Circular Economy Approaches Towards Plastic Waste Management
Abstract
Plastic waste generation has increased rapidly over the last few decades because of industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and excessive dependence on single-use plastic products. Conventional linear economic systems based on “take–make–dispose” principles have resulted in severe environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills, oceans, and urban ecosystems. Plastic waste adversely affects terrestrial and aquatic life, blocks drainage systems, contaminates soil and water resources, and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, sustainable waste management practices are urgently required to minimize environmental degradation and promote efficient utilization of resources. The concept of a circular economy has emerged as a promising strategy for transforming waste into valuable resources through reuse, recycling, recovery, and redesign of products and materials.
