Specification in Construction Project Management: A Review

Abstract

Specifications played an important role in construction projects by providing clear guidelines for materials, workmanship, and performance standards. They acted as a link between design and execution, ensuring that project requirements were properly understood by all stakeholders. Specifications helped in maintaining quality, improving communication, and reducing errors during construction. They also supported effective planning, coordination, and quality control throughout the project lifecycle. The study highlighted the relationship between specifications and management approaches such as Total Quality Management and Lean Construction, where specifications ensured consistency, minimized waste, and improved efficiency. However, challenges such as ambiguity, poor implementation, and lack of coordination were also identified. Overall, proper preparation and use of specifications contributed to better project performance, quality assurance, and successful completion of construction projects.
