Sustainable Brick Production Using Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste: An Experimental Study

CH. Sai Prakash, Vrushali Kamlakar, Badrinath Lingari

Abstract

This study explores the feasibility of manufacturing sustainable bricks using construction and demolition (C&D) waste as a partial replacement for traditional raw materials. With rapid urbanization, C&D waste contributes significantly to landfill volumes and environmental degradation. The project investigates the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of C&D-based bricks in comparison with conventional clay and fly ash bricks. Standard tests such as compressive strength, water absorption, and efflorescence were conducted as per IS: 3495–1966. Results indicate that incorporating recycled aggregates and fines from C&D waste produces bricks with acceptable compressive strength, reduced water absorption, and improved sustainability. The study concludes that C&D waste can be effectively utilized in brick manufacturing, reducing environmental impact and promoting circular construction practices.
