Monitoring of an Institutional Building Using Primavera P6 (Professional R8.3) Software

S. Poornima, Dr.G. Chitra

Abstract

The construction industry in our country makes significant contribution to Nation’s Economy and creates employment opportunities. The use of new technologies and project management strategies has made it possible to gloom. However, the industry is still faced with many problems including time overrun, cost overrun, and reconstruction due to improper management of the project from planning to execution phase. The small scale industries are also facing the same scenario. To overcome these challenges each and every project should be properly managed from start to end. Project Management means much more than keeping project management’s iron triangle (triple constraints) in check, delivering on time, budget and scope. It also creates a baseline for future works. In this study the construction of an institutional building was monitored by applying project management principles; Progress tracking and Earned Value Analysis. The delay was analyzed by updating progress using Primavera P6 (Professional R8.3) software and Cost overrun is estimated by Earned Value Analysis (EVA). The project was monitored by comparing the actual performance and planned performance. From the analysis, delay and cost overrun was encountered in this project due to demolition and reconstruction of some columns. Suitable strategies were suggested to minimize the loss percentage of the organization and the works were rescheduled. Performance of the project after implementing suitable strategies was monitored.
