Risk Assessment of Exposure to Vehicles Generated Emissions

Saad Issa Sarsam

Abstract

The emissions that are generated from vehicles exhibit one of the major environtal and health problems in recent years, especially in urban and densely populated areas. The planners of the city are concern with how such pollutants emissions from the vehicular traffic flow are perceived by the drivers, people working or  living nearby. This work presents an itemized evaluation of the gamble created and the level of individual openness to vehicle produced poison emanation along major metropolitan arterials in Mosul city, Iraq. The vehicular traffic flow characteristics (speed, density, volume, and vehicle type) were identified in the field work of the assessment at ten selected locations on the major arterials in the city. The vehicular traffic which includes (pedestria, drivers, and the number of passengers in vehicles on the road) exposed to road generated emissions were obtained through the field survey. The vehicle discharges of NOX, VOC, and CO were determined utilizing air contamination assessment PC model (Portable 4.1) in light of the traffic information got.It was concluded that the emission of CO, Nox, and VOC, are exceeding the allowable emission standard levels fixed by WHO. The risk of such pollutants exposour on possible cancer in the inspiratory system of the human body arising from personal exposure to vehicle generated emissions was analyzed and the degree of personal exposure of road users (pedestrain, drivers, and passengers) to such pollutants emission along urban arterials in Mosul city was identified.
