Designing for Dual Imperatives: Isolation Safety and Community Connection in Post-Pandemic Senior Living Architecture

Abstract


This paper explores post-pandemic architectural strategies that balance the dual imperatives of enabling effective isolation for infection control while fostering community belonging within senior living environments. It highlights the critical role of spatial design in mitigating social isolation and supporting mental health among older adults, acknowledging challenges intensified by COVID-19. Emphasizing flexible, adaptable spaces and integrated communal areas, the study aims to inform resilient, inclusive senior living models that prioritise both safety and social connection in an evolving healthcare landscape
