A Lightweight KNN-Based Framework for Network Intrusion Detection

Abstract


Cyber dangers keep getting trickier, so protecting networks matters way more now. A tool like NIDS helps spot and block harmful actions inside a system. Here’s a slimmed-down detection setup based on the KNN method, tested with part of the KDDCup99 data. That data got cleaned up first - things like turning labels into numbers and scaling values - to handle different kinds of inputs. The KNN model ran on a smaller data set to speed things up - then checked through usual measures like accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score. Outcomes reveal the setup gives solid results without complex design. Still, with good cleanup and fine-tuned settings, a straightforward method such as KNN might work well for spotting intrusions. Next steps aim at testing bigger data pools; from there, mixing different models could help live-network protection.
