Abstract

The CHAdeMO quick charging methodology provides a structured and safe approach to delivering high power DC energy to electric vehicles (EVs), ensuring rapid charging while preserving battery health. The process begins with critical safety checks, including grounding verification, insulation resistance testing, and connector locking detection, which prevent electrical hazards and ensure system reliability. Following this, a dedicated CAN communication interface between the charger and the vehicle’s Battery Management System (BMS) enables real time data exchange, including battery voltage, state of charge, temperature, internal resistance, and permissible current limits. This communication allows the charger to dynamically adjust output parameters based on the battery’s condition. The methodology employs a staged charging strategy, starting with a pre charge phase that gradually aligns battery and charger voltages to prevent inrush current. It then transitions into the constant current (CC) phase, where high DC current is delivered under BMS supervision, followed by the constant voltage (CV) phase, in which the current tapers down as the battery reaches its maximum voltage. Continuous monitoring ensures immediate response to anomalies, such as overheating, voltage irregularities, or hardware faults. Post charging, session data is logged for diagnostics, maintenance, and billing purposes. Overall, the CHAdeMO methodology achieves efficient, safe, and reliable fast charging, balancing high power delivery with battery protection and operational dependability.
