Can Do, Will Do: How Rewards Enhance Employee Voice through Motivation

Abstract


Encouraging employees to speak up with ideas, concerns, and suggestions is key to a thriving workplace, yet many hesitate due to fear of negative consequences. This study explores how different types of rewards tangible ones like bonuses and promotions, and intangible ones like praise and recognition can create an environment where employees feel safe and motivated to share their thoughts. Using insights from the proactive motivation model, we examine data from three experiments conducted in China, the UK, and the US. The results show that rewards play a crucial role in boosting employee voice by enhancing psychological safety and strengthening their connection to the organization. When employees feel appreciated and supported, they’re more likely to pay ideas that drive positive change. These findings offer practical guidance for organizations looking to foster a culture of openness, ultimately leading to better communication, innovation, and overall success.
