Managing Oral and Salivary Gland Disorders: Insights into Pharmacotherapy
Abstract
Oral and salivary gland disorders cover a wide range of conditions impacting the mouth, teeth, and salivary glands, ranging from common issues namely dental caries to more complex diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome and salivary gland tumors. While preventive dental care remains fundamental in maintaining oral health, pharmacotherapy plays an important role in managing symptoms, regulating inflammation and enhancing quality of life for individuals with these disorders. In this article, we provide an information regarding various drugs used in the treatment of oral and salivary gland disorders in humans.
The mouth contains salivary glands. Three sets of sizable salivary glands are present. Each ear's front and somewhat below are home to paratid glands. The jaw is below the submandibular glands. The tongue is covered in sublingual glands. Numerous smaller glands number in the hundreds. Through apertures known as ducts, these glands produce saliva, or spit, which is then released into the mouth. Food becomes moistened by saliva, aiding in swallowing, chewing, and food digestion. Because saliva includes antibodies that destroy pathogens, it also keeps the mouth healthy and clean.
Damage to the salivary glands or insufficient saliva production can alter taste, complicate chewing and swallowing, and raise the risk of oral infections, cavities, and tooth loss.
