Abstract


Thiamine, or vitamin B1, was the first vitamin to be identified. It acts as a catalyst regarding the generation of energy through decarboxylation of branched-chain amino acids and alpha-ketoacids and behaves as a coenzyme for transketolase reactions in the form of thiamine pyrophosphate. It is also unknown how thiamine contributes to the maintenance of the myelin sheath and the transmission of nerve impulses. In addition to outlining the normal patient presentation, related pathophysiology, and causes of thiamine deficiency, this activity also emphasizes the importance of the interprofessional team in managing the condition.
