CARBON MAPS - Personalized Carbon Emission Estimator

Abstract


Transportation is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. Accurate estimation and visualization of individual carbon footprints can enable informed travel decisions that promote sustainability. This paper presents Carbon Maps, a real-time route planning application that calculates personalized carbon emissions based on trip distance, transport mode, and dynamically adjustable passenger occupancy. Leveraging geospatial routing APIs and regional emission factor datasets, Carbon Maps offers emission estimates across multiple transport modes, including private vehicles, public transit, and active transport. The system integrates user-input passenger counts to tailor emission calculations, providing clarity on shared versus solo travel impacts. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of Carbon Maps in raising environmental awareness and supporting eco-friendly commuter choices. The modular design of the platform enables easy integration with other smart city and environmental monitoring tools.
