Next-Gen Healthcare with IoT: Applications, Challenges and Solutions

Alwin K J, Amalkrishna O, Dr Reji C Joy

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming health- care equipment into the Internet of Medical Things(IoMT) with implementations in real-time patient monitoring, personalized treatment, and clinical optimization. However, IoMT device integrations into the healthcare environment bear grave security and privacy risks, including data breaches, ransomware, hijacked devices, regulatory non-compliance, and other cyber attacks. This paper presents an exhaustive study of IoMT architec- ture, applications, communication protocols, and applications in telemedicine, smart hospitals, and chronic disease management. It accomplishes this by providing an illustrative case study of the cyber attack and device exploits witch hunts currently existing in our healthcare infrastructures to catch uncompromised vulner- abilities and mitigation strategies from zero trust to blockchain audit trails to edge-AI anomaly detection. The article is rounded off with a hint of future directions, where 5G/6G, federated learning, and ethical AI are stressed as cornerstones to building resilient, patient-centric IoT ecosystems.
