Impact of Height, Shape & Orientation of Office Building on Energy Performance in Khulna City, Bangladesh

The building is one of the most significant energy consumers with compare to other industries. Building Information modeling (BIM) is an effective tool for building energy analysis during design, construction and operational stages. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of building height, shape & orientation on energy performance. Total forty numbers of conceptual BIM models were developed by Autodesk Revit® 2015 with the main influencing factors height, shape, and orientation of the building. The total floor area of 57600 ft2, the total volume of 576000 ft3, total numbers of occupant 214 and percentage of glazing of 40% were kept constant for all models. The height of the building for each type was varied from 40ft to 200 ft. In this modeling, Autodesk Green Building Studio (GBS) was used to perform energy analysis. The finding reveals that energy consumption is increasing with increasing the height of the building. The study also reveals that the height up to 110 ft, rectangular building with elongated side facing in North/South direction that means rectangular(NS) type is more energy efficient and above 110 ft circular shape is also more energy efficient than that of others. Finally, the analysis envisages the high potential of advanced BIM approach on sustainable building design because of its high performance, accessibility and storage capacities.
