Buckling Analysis of ECC-Encased CFST Column

Manila Mahesh, Parvathy U

Abstract

Concrete filled steel tubes (CFST) are composite members consisting of a steel tube infilled with concrete. Concrete and steel work together to form composite structure therefore it become attractive solution for many engineering problem. The use of CFST in building construction has increased significantly in the recent years mainly due to its simple construction sequence and superior structural performance. In order to protect outer steel tube from corrosion, the concrete encased CFST are used. But the outer concrete is brittle and easily-crushed, the long-term durability of concrete-encased CFST columns become a major concern. To deal with above challenges, it is proposed to replace the outer concrete with engineered cementitious composite (ECC) in this paper and to form ECC-encased CFST columns. The objective of the present research work is to study the buckling behaviour of ECC-encased CFST column with different cross section. In the present research, the non-linear analysis of ECC encased concrete filled steel tube (CFST) is done using ABAQUS software. The influence of slenderness ratio, stirrup ratio, grade of inner core concrete and the thickness of steel tube were discussed in this paper.
