Review on Analysis of Composite Plates with Opening

Parvathy Sreekumar

Abstract

Plates are flat structural elements whose thickness is less when compared to other dimensions. A composite material is a combination of two or more materials that result in better performance than using the individual components alone. Some of the advantages of composite materials are high strength and stiffness, low density, light weight, low transportation cost due to light weight, high durability, corrosion resistance etc. Composite plates are made of layers of various materials are called laminated plates. Ply or lamina is the basic element of the laminated plate and it made of fibers installed into the matrix. The main load bearing members are fibers and matrix keeps the fibers in position. Fiber orientation in each lamina can be chosen to achieve desired strength and stiffness for a specific application. Composite plates are widely used in aerospace, marine and other industries. Cutouts are necessary to serve the purpose of weight reduction, ventilation purpose and to provide accessibility to other parts of the structure. The present study is focusing on composite plates with different shapes of openings.
