Design and Implementation of SIL 4 FPGA based Control Hardware for Traction Applications

Nitin Mammen Joy, K B Ramesh

Abstract

This research paper presents a comprehensive examination of the significant role played by FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) boards in the development of control hardware for traction applications, with a specific emphasis on achieving SIL-4 (Safety Integrity Level 4) compliance. Through the integration of Matlab with the Artix-7 FPGA board, the study provides crucial insights into the augmentation and streamlining of control hardware for transportation systems. Furthermore, it tackles the rigorous requirements of SIL-4 certification, highlighting the paramount importance of safety, reliability, and fault tolerance. Leveraging the robust simulation capabilities of Matlab, the paper showcases methods for validating and refining control algorithms, ensuring strict adherence to SIL-4 standards. In conclusion, this research paper constitutes a valuable asset for engineers and researchers engaged in the intricate process of designing and implementing safety-critical control systems for transportation applications.
