Adsorption of Heavy Metals from Industrial Effluent Using Moringa Oleifera Stem Ash

Arimieari L. W., Patta B. B.

Abstract

A study of Industrial effluent analysis in the laboratory was conducted, with the aim of removal of heavy metals and some other organic and inorganic constituents and desalination of effluent, the physical, chemical and heavy metal parameters were monitored and analyzed before phytoremediation. The parameters determined were hydrogen ion concentration, Total suspended solids, Total dissolved solid, pH, Temperature, Total hardness, Manganese, Cadmium, Magnesium, Iron, Lead, BOD, COD, DO, EC, Turbidity, Phosphate and Nitrate etc. The values of selected parameters were determined in the laboratory using analytical technique/method such as Electrometric pH, Argentometric for Cl-, Gravimetric for TSS, TDS, Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for metals. The ratio of these variables in the effluent represents the effectiveness and quality of phytoremediation in the treatment of industrial effluent. When compared to permissible standards WHO, parameters such as pH and temperature, TSS, TDS, TH, corresponded to standard after phytoremediation, though some of the parameters did not meet the standard. When comparing the effectiveness of the plant (moringa stem ash) utilized for the experiment, it is evident that they are more effective in treating industrial effluent because there were many clearly visible favorable results following the operations. After phytoremediation, the concentration of these parameters that do not comply with standard limits must be effectively reduced due to the treatment's low efficacy, which necessitates modification.
