Abstract

Sheet metal rack plays a vital role in housing electronic modules and various equipment of interest. This paper presents the design and analysis of sheet metal rack resulting from imposed static, dynamic and seismic loads. Design of rack for appropriate geometric dimensions, material used and suitable boundary conditions resulted in suggesting a valid factor of safety. Numerical static and modal finite element analysis performed on the rack resulted in capturing the appropriate deformation at critical sections, and pre-stressed mode shapes associated with the operating range of frequencies. In addition, the seismic analysis predicted suitable structural loads and moments that are critical to the rack at lower operating frequencies. Present studies are formulated to obtain a complete design procedure for finalizing the geometric dimensions of the sheet metal modular racks. The present approach extends its procedure to design sheet metal racks for various applications that cater for significant storage requirements.
