Innovations in Plastics Sorting and Segregation Techniques

Dr. Kondekal Manjunatha

Abstract

Plastic waste management has become a global environmental challenge due to the rapid increase in plastic consumption and limited recycling efficiency. One of the critical steps in plastic recycling is the accurate sorting and segregation of different polymer types. Traditional sorting methods are labor-intensive and inefficient for handling mixed plastic waste streams. Recent innovations in plastics sorting technologies include optical sensors, hyperspectral imaging, artificial intelligence-based classification, robotic sorting systems, and advanced spectroscopy techniques. These technologies significantly improve sorting accuracy, reduce contamination, and enhance recycling efficiency. This paper reviews recent innovations in plastics sorting and segregation techniques and discusses their advantages, limitations, and future prospects for sustainable plastic waste management.
