A Comprehensive Review of Material Handling Systems

S. J. Bansode

Abstract

Material handling systems (MHS) play a crucial role in enhancing productivity, reducing operational costs, and improving workplace safety across various industries. These systems encompass a wide range of equipment and technologies for the movement, protection, storage, and control of materials throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. This review paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the types of material handling systems—including manual, semi-automated, and fully automated systems—while evaluating their design considerations, selection criteria, and integration with Industry 4.0 technologies. The study further explores recent innovations such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs), robotic picking systems, and smart conveyor technologies. Challenges such as system complexity, high initial cost, and adaptability are also discussed. The paper concludes with future directions for research and development, emphasizing the need for sustainable, flexible, and intelligent material handling systems in the era of smart manufacturing and logistics.
