Applications and Advancements of GIS Software in Modern Engineering Practices

Sahil G.

Abstract

Geographic Information System (GIS) software has become an essential tool in various branches of engineering, including civil, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. This paper explores the role of GIS in planning, design, analysis, and management of engineering projects. It highlights how GIS facilitates spatial data analysis, integrates with CAD and BIM software, and supports decision-making processes in infrastructure development and environmental monitoring. Case studies from urban planning, disaster risk assessment, and transportation network optimization are discussed to demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of GIS tools. The study also outlines recent technological advancements such as 3D GIS, web-based GIS platforms, and the integration of remote sensing data. Challenges related to data quality, software interoperability, and skill requirements are also examined. The paper concludes with a discussion on future trends and the growing need for GIS education in engineering curricula.
