Awareness, Knowledge, Availability and Acceptance of Geriatric Care in Selected PHCs at Olorunda LGA in Osun State, Nigeria
Abstract
Geriatrics focuses on the health care of the elderly, aimed to prevent, control and treat diseases in elderlies, Professional healthcare workers can detect impairment and intervene with effective treatment and support to delay the progression. This study assessed the awareness, knowledge and acceptance of geriatric care in Selected Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in Olorunda LGA, Osun State, Nigeria. This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design among 210 primary health care workers in health facilities at Olorunda LGA, in Osun State, selected via multi-stage sampling using a semi-structured self-administered questionnaire for data collection, analyses were done using an IBM SPSS version 25.0 and the statistically significant level was set at p<0.05. Overall, 65.70% have good knowledge of geriatric care and those that have been previously trained in geriatrics are seven times more likely to have good knowledge p=0.004, OR:7.629 and CI =3.124 -18.524. Other associated factors influencing the knowledge and awareness of primary healthcare workers include the level of education, designation and years of working at their current health facility. The awareness and knowledge of the respondents were good with a high geriatric care acceptance level; however, respondents still lack some specific geriatric services and related knowledge. Since those who were previously trained have more good knowledge and awareness, training and re-training of primary healthcare workers are recommended.
