Impact of Biodiesel Blends and Additives on Diesel Engine Combustion, Performance, and Emissions: A Review

Rakesh Verma

Abstract

The Diesel engine stands out as one of the most efficient internal combustion engines. However, conventional fossil fuels contribute significantly to pollution, prompting a search for eco-friendly and renewable alternatives. Biodiesel has emerged as a viable alternative fuel, offering almost no sulfur or aromatics. Its use in traditional Diesel engines significantly reduces unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. Yet, biodiesel also has drawbacks, including higher density, lower heating value, increased fuel consumption, and elevated nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. To address these issues, additives are introduced into biodiesel. These additives, with their superior thermal and chemical properties, enhance combustion efficiency, resulting in reduced hydrocarbon emissions and improved performance in compression ignition (CI) engines. This review examines the impact of various additives on biodiesel, focusing on their effects on combustion, performance, and emissions
