A Descriptive study on the existing mouth care practices for critically ill patients with a view to develop self-instructional module among staff nurses in critical care unit, Jayabharat Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh

Abstract


Most patients in critical units are completely dependent on nurse to perform all care even the mouth care. So the nurse must be an arrangement of activities that are frequently introduced to patients to be able to provide high priority for mouth care among critically ill patient, mouth care seems to be one of the nursing actions. It has been noticed that oral hygiene had a low main concern in relationship with other actions among critically ill patients in ICU. This will help the nurses to practice standard protocol for mouth care in critically ill. This study aims to assess existing mouth care practices for critically ill patients among staff nurses. A descriptive design was selected. Non probability purposive samplings were used to select the 100 samples. The population of the study was considered as staff nurses who were working in critical care units. Selected participants were from Jayabharat Hospital, Nellore. Standard tools were used to collect the data from participants. The content validity of tool was obtained by various experts from medical and surgical department. The pilot study was conducted with 10 samples. Data collection of the main study done for 4 weeks. The data was collected by using self-administered questionnaire in various aspects of mouth care practices. The base line data was tabulated by formulating frequency table. Based on the present study results, majority 37 percent of patients were not having any oral dysfunctions, 32 percent were having moderate dysfunction, 25 percent were having mild oral dysfunctions and remaining 6 percent of patients were having severe oral dysfunctions. The data indicates that majority 83% of them are having good practice regarding mouth care in ICU, 17% of them are having poor practice. The present study had been supported by a serious of other studies. This study recommended that organized and implemented a health education program by specialized academic nursing staff to educate adolescent girls as regards all updates of reproductive tract infections and its preventive measures.
