The Effects of Aqueous Extract of Unripe Plantain on Alcohol- Induced Ulcer In Wistar Rats.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of aqueous extract of unripe plantain on alcohol-induced ulcers using Wistar rats. A total of 20 Wister rats, The animals were randomly distributed into five groups namely; A, B, C, D and E of four rats each. Group A serves as the negative control group and was given feed and water only. All groups except A were induced with absolute alcoho(1ml of 100% alcohol) after overnight fasting. Group A (negative control) tooked distilled water and feed for 14 days. Group B (positive control) tooked distilled water, indomethacin (30mg/kg) and feed for 14 days. Group C (low dose) tooked distilled water feed and indomethacin (30mg/kg) for 14 days. Group D(Medium dose) tooked distilled water, feed, indomethacin (30mg/kg) and 200ml acqeous extract of unripe plantain for 14 days. Group E(High dose) tooked distilled water, feed, indomethacin (30mg/kg) and 250ml acqeous extract of unripe plantain for 14 days. After 14 days of treatment, wistar rats were euthanized using chloroform. the stomach were harvested immediately and was blotted using filter paper to remove traces of blood after which they were fixed in 10% formal saline for subsequent histological study. From this present study we observed histopathological changes highlight both the potential benefits and risks of using fermented plantain extract as a therapeutic agent. While fermented plantain may offer gastro protective effects at lower doses, higher doses may pose risks of inflammation and glandular damage. These findings emphasize the importance of dose optimization to maximize therapeutic efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. Moreover, the ulceration observed in the indomethacin-treated group serves as a benchmark for evaluating the gastro protective properties of unripe plantain extract.
