Abstract

Inflammatory disorders that affect the periodontium—the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone—are referred to as periodontal disease. Gingivitis, a reversible inflammation caused by plaque accumulation that affects up to 90% of the population, is how the condition typically begins. Without intervention, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, which is a chronic, destructive, and irreversible condition manifested by loss of attachment, alveolar bone resorption, and eventual tooth loss. Anaerobic bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola are linked to the pathogenesis; they infiltrate the surrounding periodontium and periodontal tissues and trigger an immunological response in the patient. Although the goal of this reaction is to eradicate the infection and offer protection, particularly against bacteria, it unintentionally harms the periodontium, which accelerates the course of the disease. Poor dental hygiene, smoking, diabetes, aging, and genetic predisposition are important risk factors.

Diagnosis is related to clinical signs namely gingival bleeding, periodontal pocketing, radiographic bone loss, and tooth mobility. Management is associated with a structured approach, including scaling and root planing, patient education, and ongoing maintenance. Early detection and timely intervention are critical to inhibit complications, particularly in patients along with systemic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effective inhibition and treatment can decrease disease progression and promote both oral and systemic health outcomes. This activity explains about a comprehensive overview of periodontal disease along with its pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic strategies, and proof-based treatment modalities, covering both nonsurgical and surgical interventions. In addition, the exercise highlights how crucial interprofessional cooperation is for accurately diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
