Design of LED based Lantern as per MNRE Rural Lighting Specification

Vijay Kumar Chalwa, Ramanarasimha. K, Vikhan .

Abstract

Objective  of  the  project  is  to  develop  solar  based   L.E.D  luminarie  which  are  M.N.R.E compliant. For the development of L.E.D based luminarie, various steps were involved. The first and foremost step was the selection of high power white L.E.D which produced a high lumen output. The subsequent steps involved the theoretical calculations; DIALux simulations based on the  theoretical calculations,  assembling  of components  after the simulation  output  met   the M.N.R.E specifications, photometric evaluation of the prototypes, I.E.S file generation and then final dialux simulation to evaluate the light output of the prototype. The tools involved were dialux and Photometric Pro for I.E.S file generation. Based on the simulations that were carried out using  the  I.E.S  files  generated  for  the  prototype,  it  was  found  to  meet  the  lighting specifications prescribed by the M.N.R.E. Once the M.N.R.E Specification are met, further design improvements are carried out in battery and LED source, these improvements will make the above products more marketable and viable. The solar lantern developed incorporated a novel method of white light generation using the remote phosphor technology. This not only had a payback period of as low as one year, but also was more aesthetic than existing fixtures. They provide clean and green illumination and compared to the other products existing in the market, also they offer a cheaper alternative but at the same time, do not compromise on the expected light levels.
