Impact of Automation on Labor Conditions in Forestry

Raj Kumar

Abstract

Forestry operations are traditionally labor-intensive due to their specific tasks and operational modes. However, advancements in mechanization offer potential to significantly reduce labor requirements. This study explores how increasing mechanization levels can decrease labor demand in forestry tasks. Four scenarios were analyzed: 1) Variant W1, the baseline with current labor consumption values; 2) Variant W2, with a 25% increase in mechanization; 3) Variant W3, with a 50% increase; and 4) Variant W4, with a 75% increase. The analysis, conducted through simulation, revealed notable reductions in labor needs across different worker categories with higher mechanization. Nevertheless, it also highlighted the increased need for skilled operators, as the training requirements for advanced machinery are substantial. The shift towards mechanization results in a reduction in unskilled labor but increases the demand for trained personnel.
