Analysis of the Factors Affecting the Movement of Services on Lagos State Inland Waterways

Abstract


The constant heavy traffic observed in the city of Lagos is no doubt contributing the poor service delivery of other sectors. This is mostly prominent in the manufacturing and service sector, where human physical present is unavoidable. Furthermore, road transportation served in the Lagos state has been stretched beyond limit. Most international cargo in Nigeria must passed through the state. This called for the need to perform an analysis of the factors affecting the movement of services on Lagos state inland waterways is unavoidable. Descriptive statistical tools and multiple regression analysis were used. it was revealed that 65.52% of sampled populations are male, 55% are Degree holders, 47% married and 48% of samples are civil servants. Also, that majority of the respondents (58.6%) are daily users and about 26% of the respondents observed that inland waterways transportation service in the state is either bad or very bad.  Furthermore, Multiple correlation coefficient (R) =0.942 implied that there exist a strong correlation between factors affecting movement and user’s characteristic. Multiple correlation determinant (R2) = 0.887. It was heralded that, weak transport policy formulation, safety of transport service and high cost are factors that accounted for low patronage of inland waterways transport in Lagos state. Synergy is needed between supply and demand players in the inland water ways transport service for high productivity enhancement.
