Objectives, Symptoms, Mechanism of Action, Administration, Adverse Effects, Contraindications, Monitoring, Toxicity and Enhancing Health Care Team Outcomes of Statin Medications
Abstract
Statin medications are utilized regarding the management of hypercholesteremia. Statins are inhibitors of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase enzyme and lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride concentrations. The FDA-approved statins are atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, and pitavastatin. Individuals at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease need more aggressive management strategies along with higher-intensity statin therapy. The mechanisms of action, dosage guidelines, clinical toxicology, possible drug interactions, pharmacokinetics, and monitoring techniques pertaining to healthcare practitioners' management of hypocholesteremia are reviewed by participating clinicians. The importance of coronary artery calcium scoring in unclear conditions is highlighted. The interprofessional team learns the optimal statin prescribing guidelines from this activity.
