Subhadeep Karak, U. Thapa

Abstract

Nutrition serves as a crucial building block for healthy development, yet this fact is often overlooked. People today are increasingly concerned about having a healthy lifestyle to combat metabolic disorders and lifestyle diseases. The majority of people in civilised countries has never even heard of millet; much less comprehend its nutritional advantages .Millets are small-seeded grasses that are hardy and grow well in dry zones as rain-fed crops under marginal conditions of soil fertility and moisture. They are nutri-cereals which are climate compliant and highly nutritious and are known to have high nutrient content which includes protein, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber, B-Vitamins, minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and magnesium which have anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties. With their high nutrient content, including fibre that aids in metabolic disorders like Diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as their high protein content that promotes child growth and development and calcium, all millet meals have substantial health benefits. This paper aims for awareness of the importance and nutritional aspects of the millets along with the review on the scientific empirical studies on functional aspects and health benefits of millets.
